oo3. Puggerfly

About a month ago I saw on Facebook a listing for a virtual race called the Pug Run. It was an on your own, at your own pace, no pressure one miler, 5k or 10k and all proceeds benefitted a Pug rescue and rehabilitation in Illinois. Plus it had the CUTEST medals.. How could I say no!?

Then my wonderful friend Elizabeth surprised me by signing me up for the race, so I really COULDN’T say no.

002. Mud Run! 

This weekend I participated in a 5k mud run in my city to benefit the local gym/fitness center. Myself and several coworkers signed up to do it together, and I received permission for my husband to follow us through the course to monitor my blood sugar via my Dexcom.


We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into.

001. The First of Many

Today I ran my first 5K.

I know, I have a post called “A Non-Runner’s Review of the Flip Belt.” But after visiting Frank and his family over the summer and seeing him get up at 4am and run, like, 8 miles every single day, I was inspired to try it. I ran a couple times in the fall, but gave up when it got cold.

Then this spring we started a weight loss challenge at work. I joined because you get $25 at the end of the 90 days if you don’t miss more than 1 weigh-in and I figured I can buy a lot of Taco Bell with $25.

Some things in my life are changing. I’ve never been very athletic. I played a couple sports and was mediocre at best. It just isn’t me. But this morning, I started running.


Every morning I was in California, Frank got up at 4:30am to go running. Every single day. I’ve never been that dedicated to anything in my life. But why not? If he can do that, why can’t I?

So this morning I got up at 5:30, laced up my Nikes, turned up Daft Punk on my iPod and started running. And it was hard, SO hard. I barely slept last night because I was so nervous. Would I be able to go more than a block without stopping? Would my blood sugar crash partway through? Would I absolutely HATE it?
